A Pondering Mind

A little of this. A little of that.

“I think it’s dangerous to think you know what you’re writing. I usually don’t know, and usually I just discover it in the course of writing. I envy those writers who can outline a beginning, a middle, and end. Fitzgerald supposedly did it. John Irving does. Bret Easton Ellis does. But for me, the writing itself is the process of discovery. I can’t see all that far ahead.”

      1. I greatly enjoy the process of discovery. If I knew in advance what happens in the story and how it ends, there would be no point in writing it.

        1. That makes sense. Do you have a special time of the day to do your writing, or do you just wing it?

          1. I prefer to write in the morning before the day intervenes with “stuff,” but I can write at other times, if need be.

  2. I can’t see that far ahead either. What I right just evolves as I write it. I have no idea where I will end up until I get there.

  3. I would be one needing the outline or I’d get lost. I read one novel by him, Story of My Life. Good, dry humor.
