and also do them with a pen, which i have been doing that, for almost 40 years.

I do with pen also. I work them at breakfast, lunch and supper. (Who wants to talk with their mouth full? )
It’s amazing when I don’t know some answers one day. I can come back the next and complete the puzzle.
If I am stuck, I do look at an answer. BUT I am able to pin point my eyes on the exact spot of the missing answer and never see anything else.
I think cross-word-puzzling is like any other sport. You can only communicate the fun and enjoyment of it to another fan.
May you enjoy another 40 years.
