I think that quote is a bit of an over-simplification. Many subjugated people are powerless, not because they gave up power, but because either they never had power to begin with, or had power taken from them. However, people who don’t have power as individuals may find power by joining together with other like-minded individuals in common cause. By extension, I suspect this is what Alice Walker had in mind.
